Ubiquitous Marketing

Ubiquitous Marketing is the personal weblog of Keith O’Brien, editor-in-chief of PRWeek. All opinions and work represent that of Keith O’Brien and not of his employer. Topics covered include marketing, PR, advertising, journalism, culture (both mainstream and alternative), and their inevitable confluence.

Embrace the trade-off

December 6th, 2007 · No Comments

To care about search-engine rankings is to cede some level of privacy  and internal thoughts (also, free time). That’s what Matt Creamer described in his piece in AdAge (which I just got around to reading). He let Reprise Media give him a SEO boost, which included the launch of a blog.
I took a similar path [...]

Pay-per-page view a rough sell

December 4th, 2007 · No Comments

Lost in the hubbub about Gawker losing half of its staff in 48 hours (sorry, n+1, you are not the cause (side note: it appears n+1 is not too high-minded enough to send out a plaintive “read me and link” e-mail) is the fact that the staffers really rebelled against the pay-per-page view, performance-based compensation.
I’ve [...]

Be afraid to speak…

July 17th, 2007 · No Comments

The comments from science geeks re: this Wired Q&A with Danny Boyle are hilarious.
Doyle put forth his new film, Sunshine, as a thinking man’s sci-fi film. That sort of declaration might play well in Peoria or at Time.com, but not among Wired readers.
“Alien, one of the great masterpieces, was quickly followed by Star Wars.” Yes, [...]

Funny - LOL

July 15th, 2007 · No Comments

Two LOLCats-inspired bits brightened my week. One, a comment, on Gawker.
I subjected myself to McCarren Pool a couple Sunday’s ago and as I looked around at the concentration of bad fashion choices, (not even beer makes these people attractive!) all I could think of was LOLHipsters! “Im in yur momz clozets werring hur clothz! LOLZ!
Two [...]

Whither niche?

June 9th, 2007 · No Comments

I know I count former Weblogs Inc. bloggers as readers, so maybe they’ll answer this privately, but what happened to all their niche blogs? Did they just slowly go to pasture (look at how many are on hiatus or retired). Or was it an abrupt end? I guess AOL just wanted the major ones. Knowing [...]

Young American (Ombudsmen)

March 31st, 2007 · No Comments

CrotchetyMan-in-Chief Jack Shafer e-filed an interesting column on the search for the next New York Times ombudsman.
In fact, he offered up inspired choices: publishing upstarts like Josuah Micah Marshall and Elizabeth Spiers. It’s an interesting way to go (and all candidates seem worthwhile), but I think it demonstrates that “gotta interest the kids” mentality that, [...]

Death Valley

February 26th, 2007 · 2 Comments

Finally going through the mess that was my Google Reader to get things organized, and I’m struck at how many dead blogs there are in my feeds. If you did previously blog and abandoned it, I’ve love to know why in the comments. If you know someone who has, what got to them? Low page [...]

Build what you can

February 11th, 2007 · No Comments

Having spent some time trying to create solutions and/or hacks for PRWeek’s feeds and podcast feeds, I’ve come to realize how much easier it is to use the power of community or third-party solutions. Such as Feedburner. Feedburner is in the business of making raw feeds better. I’m in the business of making PRWeek.com better. [...]
